colour on the woodland floor
Today, we went for a walk along the trails at our camp. My favorite path runs along the boundary, next to our zig-zag cedar fence and among young white pine, grey birch, red maple and balsam fir.

The weather has been very damp, so I expected to find fungi along the way. But I was surprised to see a beautiful patch of bright orange toadstools, each with a distinct orange-red center. They stood out among the red-brown leaves and green mosses.

I am not good at the identification of fungi, but I think this is Caesar’s mushroom (Amanita caesarea). It is easily confused with the poisonous Amanita muscaria, so no one should use my painting as an identification guide. Just a celebration of orange and red on a fall day.

a sad story about grapes
We have just experienced a severe thunder storm. I was in town for aquasize and a few groceries. As I pulled into the grocery store parking lot, I could see very dark clouds in my rear-view mirror. We had been warned of the approaching front last evening, so I was not surprised.

I went in to the grocery store and immediately saw some lovely grapes. I think they were the most beautiful green seedless grapes I have ever seen. I picked out a bag for supper and went on for the rest of my groceries. I was reaching for soup ingredients (carrots, celery, onions and turnip) when the lights went out. Dead quiet – you don’t realise how noisy those coolers and freezers are until they suddenly go quiet.

The store staff were so good to everyone. They herded us gently toward the front of the store, saying the registers would continue to work for about a half hour. I was so happy! I would have grapes for our supper! The cashier rang up my few items. I ran my debit card and no luck. Just as I made it through, all the debit machines were down!

With no groceries to show for my trip, I ran out to the truck and was absolutely drenched in the downpour. Not too much of a problem since I was already a bit wet from my trip to the pool for aquasize!

My sad story about grapes is about a relatively minor problem. There is flooding in low lying areas in the city and 20,000 homes are still without power. We have power, so I am one of the lucky ones. But they were such beautiful grapes!

a moment of beautiful – sun on icy drops of rain
~
After the rain overnight and some icy temperatures, the melting ice on the Old Man’s Beard lichen and the ice coat clinging to the branches made for a beautiful scene outside my guest room window. To add to the show, a stray reflection of sun projected dazzles of light on the garage doors.

a moment of beautiful – shadow forest

from the trees, truth, but the artist lies

shadow trees without wild life
red squirrels and blue jays

green flame

~
In the afternoon, on a sunny day, the light from the stained glass window in our stairwell finds a place on the wall of our living room. For a few moments, blues, reds and greens create a gorgeous splash of colour. Yesterday afternoon, the spotlight settled behind the curtained door to the library. And a green flame shimmered among the folds of fabric, a reminder of the greenery slumbering out in the yard, beneath the snow.

a moment of beautiful – blooming plants for Christmas
the space – the east-facing window in our dining room
the beautiful – brilliant red flowers of the Lipstick Plant
A couple of my houseplants have given me an early Christmas gift. I had a hearty blooming of my Christmas Cactus early in December, and then, last week, my Lipstick Plant (Basketvine) (Aeschynanthus pulcher) burst into brilliant red blooms. Aeschynanthus is a subtropical genus from the same family as African Violets. This is the second time it has bloomed for me in the last two years.

I am sure this plant is wishing me, and you, a Merry Christmas !!!
