abandoned gardens: how they escape

Escape artists. How do those plants we see in ditches and fields get there?
Some move by seed. Some by vegetative reproduction (by horizontal roots or by rooting of a part of the plant).
~

A good example of ‘escape by seed’ is the lupin. The lupin sets its seed in pods. When they dry, the seeds are launched as projectiles and so can travel quite far in a single generation.
~
~
A good example of ‘escape by vegetative reproduction’ is the orange day-lily. It only rarely sets seed. It moves along ditches or into other locations by rhizomes (horizontal roots).

In New Brunswick, you don’t have to drive far to see an orange day-lily or a lupin.

Canada lilies by the highway
On a drive to Chipman today we came back via the old Trans Canada (now Highway 105) through Grand Lake Meadows. The Canada lily (also called meadow lily), Lilium canadense, is in bloom. Each plant holds its lily chandelier above the other field vegetation. They are bright orange with dark spots and hang downward.

This seems to be the time of year for lilies. I have three varieties of day-lily in my garden and when one finishes its blooming, another begins.

decorating for Christmas #1
Mid-December and the countdown to Christmas has begun. I love to decorate for the holiday. At one time, the entire house was decked out … one year I decorated seven Christmas trees!
~
As I get older, I keep the decorating to a few well-loved vignettes and I always try to include some natural greenery.
Last week we went to our cabin and I snipped a bouquet of cedar boughs …

The crock is one of my collection of crocks, this one special since it was made at MEDALTA Potteries Ltd., not far from where I lived in Medicine Hat in Alberta.

A contest ! What is ‘beelwort’?
In writing my science-fiction book Meniscus: Crossing The Churn, I had a lot of fun inventing plant and animal species to populate the planet Meniscus. I also enjoyed thinking of the various common items a traveller on the planet might encounter. I include a Glossary at the end of the book, to help the reader. However, one item is not identified, on purpose. I thought it might be fun to keep readers guessing about the identity of this item … “beelwort” …

What is ‘beelwort’ ???
~
When we first meet Odymn, the book’s protagonist, she is a slave in the city of Prell. She puts in her days at a bar, waiting tables. Being a waitress in Prell is no fun. As the book says, every day has its challenges: boiling coffee thrown, the brutal behavior of the Gel-head customers, and, worst of all —
Slices of beelwort slipped into a pocket …
The “wort” in “beelwort” suggests a plant or plant product. The only other thing I know about “beelwort” is now part of my draft of Book Four — Meniscus: The Town at Themble Hill. Odymn talks about her cooking:
‘When we return to Garth,” she says,
“I refuse to take another turn at cooking.
No one likes what I make.”
“I like what you make,” says the Slain.
“You’d eat beelwort on a stick,”
says Odymn.

So what is “beelwort”?
~
For example, a slice of “beelwort” in a pocket might be like having a slice of orange put into your pocket …
~

something orange
I love the colour orange. It must be so – it is one of the most used ‘tag’ words in my blog postings.

This is a rather whimsical ‘side-view’ watercolour of an orange mushroom I saw recently in our cottage woods. I published the ‘top-view’ in an earlier post.
