fields of green and marble statues

On April 1, I biked along the road to La Rivière and Saint-Hilaire-la-Palud. Lots of green fields and flat land …

At an intersection, I saw a shrine, indicating the strong Catholic roots of the area. I have seen these shrines at several locations in central France on my virtual travels. Sometimes the shrine is a crucifix …

sometimes a statue of Christ …

Sometimes the shrine shows a Saint. In Maillezais is a statue of Mary holding the body of her son Jesus in her lap, after the Crucifixion. It is similar to the famous 15th century statue of the Pietà by Michelangelo…

statue in Maillezais of Mary holding Jesus in her lap – the image is not easy to see, but Google ‘Pieta’ to see the beautiful statue by Michelangelo (image from Street View)

Best View: entry to a field by a vine-covered building…

Hi. It is easiest if you have a small on-line computer or laptop to see Street View as you cycle. You can also load images to a thumb drive. I just download 26 imagaes (a,b,c …z) and, at a minute per image, it takes me through 30 minutes of exercise. Let me know if you do try it. Jane

Hi Jane ….These monuments to Christ remind me of the many small towns and villages in Quebec and Northern New Brunswick. Peddling must be a lot easier … pretty level roads everywhere! 🙂 Talk to you later … I’m off to dig up and turn the soil in the vegetable garden today! – Denis

Hi Denis. Everything is so level, it reminds me of Alberta. Have fun getting ready for the growing season! Jane

Sometimes it’s interesting to see how the area changes around shrines. The houses and roads grow around them to the point where they are set off by small walls or fences. I love your drawing with the spots of different greens.

Hi Carol. Thanks! Some of the shrines I’ve ‘seen’ in France share the space with other things – signs, electrical panels, etc. I’ve also seen the fences and walls you mention. Jane
