juvenile Bald Eagle

with 21 comments

Last evening, we drove along the St. John River looking for fiddleheads and were delighted to see a juvenile Bald Eagle (Haliaeetus leucocephalus).

He was sitting on the dead branch of a Silver Maple, just above the highway.  He stayed quite still as I took a few photos.  He was huge compared to the hawks and osprey we usually see in the trees along the raodway.  His plumage was tawny and brown, and his talons were a beautiful orange.  Occasionally, he would twist his head and his eye would gleam, reflecting the light of the setting sun.

  4. Hi Jane,,,You are very much like my Jones.! He searches for the Eagles,,,he cases over every inch of his travels,,looking for anything that he will pass to anyone who will listen. Yesterday when we were on the golfcourse,,,he “found” the Pileated Woodpecker on # 7. He was totally “beside it” as it was digging her hole in the downed tree for her “obvious” nest. She did not care how close he was.! We think they are a beautiful bird.! Then Philip cases the sky of course,,he gets up at any hour to see whatever is supposed to be seen that night. Etc,,Etc,,Etc,,,A beautiful way to be,,I hope he does not change,,,it is a “good” thing. Thanks for all your works Jane,,,gives us a little bit of just about everything.! And By The Way,,,,Happy Belated Mothers Day,,,I bet you had a barbequed steak.?

    • Hi Patsi. No BBQ for me, but we did go out to a very nice brunch at a local hotel. Happy Mother’s Day to you too. I’m glad Jones is a birdwatcher. It is very important not to be the driver (car not golf) when you are trying to spot birds! I wonder if you or Jones saw the three comets I am remembering. Jane

      • I asked philip if he seen any of those comets,,,,,he thinks he had seen Haleys comet but he did not see the others. Not sure why,,, but I think it may have been overcast at the time.? Interesting,,,I may just check my journals.!

      • Hi. Check for sure! In my experience, sky events are often thwarted by overcast clouds! Jane

  6. You’re lucky to have captured him on camera! I can just imagine you yelling at Glen to stop the car and hopping out … scrambling to get out into the field for this picture! 🙂

    • Hi Denis. You know me well. Actually, we took a while to get stopped and turned around, but the Bald Eagle was very obliging and waited for me to get lots of photos. Glen thought he was distracted by the nearby sound of a saw, because they are not usually willing to stay still once they see you coming toward them. Jane
