poetry and prose about place

accents in red

with 15 comments

We are still in the greys and browns of spring.

There are a few wildflowers blooming. The Coltsfoot is spreading carpets of yellow along the roadside.  And flowers in the deep hardwoods have begun to display their delicate beauty.  But most places are drab and colorless.

I watch for red this time of year.  There are a few red berries, still clinging to their branches after winter.

And the stems of Red Osier Dogwood (Cornus stolonifera Michx.) are brilliant in the fields and ditches.

My favorite ‘red’ of spring is the muted red of the blueberry fields.

  1. What a beautiful landscape – I love that type of open vista where the mountains look endless as they take you on a journey out into the distance. Cheers me up as I sit closed up listening to the never ending rain again!

    • Hi. The photo of the blueberry fields captures only a bit of its magic. There are days when the atmosphere is just right and it looks like the distant hills go on forever. Jane

  3. Love the contrasts in colours from almost none to brilliant reds, and loved, absolutely loved the “toenails in red” line. What a terrific blog!

    • Hi Ellen. It’s one thing I like about blogging… what seems everyday to me is new to someone else! Have a look at JD’s photo in this set of comments to see what the fields look like in autumn. He is a terrific photographer. I am so glad you like the poem! Jane

  6. I’m not from an area with many dogwoods or blueberry plants. The fields are absolutely beautiful..I had never realized that blueberry plants have a reddish color before that get their leaves.

    • Hi. You should see the blueberry fields in the fall. Their leaves turn a brilliant red and the photo from spring is just a washed out version of what they look like in autumn! Jane
