about
This blog space will be devoted to poetry and prose about ‘niche’. I’ll include poems and stories about human space: home and away, past and present. I’ll write to explore some of the place-based themes I love: laughing and talking with friends, growing and gathering food, wandering in forest and field, and travelling to other places. Because I am a biologist, I’ll also write about wild plants and animals, and the spaces where they live and interact with one another.
I also illustrate my posts with my pencil drawings and paintings. I love to draw and pencil is a very obliging medium.
Right now, I’m posting on Monday, Wednesday, and Friday … so visit often!!

The violet watercolour is one of the first I did and it remains a favourite. The purple violet is our provincial flower in New Brunswick.

Gorgeous artwork–are those African Violets? They remind me of my late grandmother.

Hi. They are related. These are ‘Purple Violets’, a wild flower. They grow in our lawn. My grandmother kept African violets too. Thanks for your comment. Jane

I am engaged in a virtual bike trip across the US & Canada (Washington state through Canada to Vermont). I am cycling on a stationary bike and using Google images & Street Views to tell me about the places & pass through. It’s connected to my efforts to write the stories contained in 3 hope chests full of 19th century family letters & diaries, based in Vermont. I admire all that you are doing with ideas about place and art. I am blogging about my experience with virtual travel, and I want to share information about yours & others I have discovered. I have shared your blog and one watercolor on my site, and I hope this will bring you more admirers.

Hi Jenny. Great to hear from you. I am now cycling (virtual) the length of the Saint John River, beginning in Maine and ending in city of Saint John. Great way to see places. I like your idea of linking it to history! Jane

Love the drawings … and the fact that drawing is the passion outside of the career.

Hi Jane,
Random compliment of the day — found your site today (spotted one of your *wonderful* landscape sketches while searching for info on the pink variant of Nymphaea odorata!) and just wanted to let you know I’m really enjoying exploring your posts. I think we share the same web of interests (art-science-poety) and our passion for environmental observation. Wishing you all the best,
K.
