the colour of November #2 – wood for the winter
November in New Brunswick can be bleak. Before the snow is on the ground, the colours are dominated by browns and greys. Like the browns and greys in our woodpiles.

We have several woodpiles. These include ranks of large round wood, cut and split into stove lengths, and stored in our shed. We also have spruce and fir kindling, chopped fine to start the fire. In the garage is a pile of smaller round wood, mostly the limbs trimmed from our maple trees. This smaller wood will be the base for our fires, a way for the flames to step from the kindling to the bigger wood.

I love wood fires, the look, the sound, the smell. We have a propane insert now but I really miss the crackle and fragrance of a wood fire. Lovely blog and lovely painting.

Hi Jane,,,I’m still thinking about your trip,,,,We were very happy to hear that you took the time to go away and how nice to be with your son.! I bet it was not long enough .? Now you are talking about wood. I certainly miss our “fireplace”. When philip build our last home he built a fireplace,,,not for “heat” but for the luxury and oh my,,,it was Heaven.! I certainly miss it a lot.! I think we will have to install a stove in the garage,,,I’d love to own a kemack. (spelling is wrong I am sure.!) Philip and I very much enjoyed getting a few cord of wood,,,then splitting it,,,then stock piling it. Good exercise also. Do you do any of that work with your hubby.? Hi Patsi. They say that with wood you are warmed three times, once when you cut it, once when you split and pile it, and once when you burn it. We’ve done it all. We have wood from our own property since we don’t burn as much as we once did. We also work together but my husband does most of the work now that my knees are not good. The wood stove is definitely one of the good sides of winter. Jane
