the colour of October #1- Virginia Creeper

Our Virginia Creeper comes from a shoot I collected along the banks of the St. John River over 30 years ago. It grows on our power pole. Some years it makes great progress and gets to the top of the pole to grow along the wires. Other years it struggles to gain any hold at all after damaging winds, or if the power company decides it needs cutting back. The last few years it has grown into the neighboring bushes. As a result, my lilacs seem to have mutant leaves and turn scarlet when the other lilacs are a sickly yellow.

This year the Virginia Creeper leaves are shot with holes from the same insect infestation plaguing them last year.

I love this painting. We have a lot of Virginia Creeper here, and the reds in the leaves are so vibrant. It’s one of my favorite plants.

I always like your pictures–but I think this one is my favorite. I really like dreamy background with the vibrant leaves in the foreground.

Well as you know it somehow made its way to Enfield. It has spread everywhere. Very beautiful this time of year. The red is amazing.

Jane my V creeper almost killed a healthy white birch. I pull as much as I can each year to keep it under control! Although it is very beautiful in the fall.

Hi Jim. We keep ours back by having it in an area that we mow. However, it sprouts up in odd places, buy our door for example, all the way across the lawn! Jane
