On April 23rd, my virtual bike trip took me along huge cornfields, reminding me of the big cornfields in southern Ontario …

I was also excited to see small round white shapes in the plowed fields. I thought they must be mushrooms …

I even convinced myself I saw a Chanterelle in one field, even though I know these are usually found in rich woodlands …

The joke is on me!!! I knew what I was really seeing when I biked past a pile of small white stones at the edge of one field …

Well, I had to look up chanterelle, incredibly I had never heard of this kind of mushroom before. Or perhaps we call it by a different name in these parts? I will have to study the mushroom offerings in the produce department the next time I go food shopping. Love your drawing of the corn ears and teeth!

Hi Barbara. I know Chanterelles because they are edible. Years ago, when I went to my first Naturalists meeting ever, I didn’t know the Chanterelle either, and they gave me the job of preparing and frying a feed of Chanterelles for the people at the meeting. I cheerfuly prepared them and, expert that I was 😦 , told everyone all about the Chanterelle, how to recognise it, etc. I don’t know if they are sold locally – probably depends on the locale. Jane

It’s funny how eyes play tricks on us, isn’t it? I’ve often had this happen to me as I’m travelling through strange countryside. Because I’m not familiar with what is there, I imagine it to be what I know until I learn the difference. Your drawing of ears and teeth is amazing. It makes the corn seem a bit spooky.
