poetry and prose about place

a moment of beautiful – icicles

with 13 comments

the space: drip line of a house on a winter day

the beautiful: icicles

~

On the day after an increase in temperature, when the snow from the roof is melting, the front of our house, on the south side and in full sun, is always dripping and making icicles.

They glitter and sparkle, sculptural wonders of frozen water.

ice storm

~

for three days

freezing rain and willow

have hung uncertain magic

along the river

~

ice in layers

laid on the bones

of the tree tops, branches break

candy-coats crack in the sun

~

I refuse the sparkle

resist the awe

worry

the bones will not recover

  2. You built the house yourselves? Wow I’m so impressed!

I like the last stanza. I always wonder how trees can survive such freezing temps.

    • Hi. We began building in 1980 and it’s not really finished yet! Thanks for the comment on the poem. Trees are tough! Jane

  3. Love your expression, “hung uncertain magic.” Ice is pretty but can be dangerous. I love the shingles on your house – are they cedar? A lot of homes on Cape Cod have them but not too many here in Connecticut.

    • Hi Barbara. Yes, they are cedar shingles. We have never treated them in any way, so they look very weather-worn. They’ve done well for 33 years. We built the house ourselves. Jane

      • I love that weather-worn look! That must have been so meaningful, building your own house. My parents built theirs when I was a toddler and I have a few glimpses of memories – like the cement being poured for the foundation.

      • Hi. I’ve lived around houses being built all my life. My Dad built my family’s first house and our first cabin, also he and my husband and I built the home we live in now. I can still remember how he encouraged me to help even when I was just little. When I was seven, he had me fill my own form with rocks before the cement was poured in one of the cabin supports. Those early experiences gave me the confidence to build when I was older. Jane

    • Hi Jenn. Nice to hear from you. I appreciate the warmer weather today, probably not as much as you do! Jane
